*SEE PRINTED NOTES…..

1 - Linux Declared 'Hacker Proof' – During a recent CanSecWest Security Conference and Contest (Pwn 2 Own) - Vista and OSX Hacked – Linux remains the most secure OS available from this perspective. The MacBook Air running OS X was hacked first via an undisclosed Safari flaw (Took hackers 2 minutes), then Vista box was hacked via a Flash flaw which allowed hackers to exploit the Vista OS.  These systems were hacked after loading of set standard applications.  The hackers were persuaded with a $10,000 prize and a $5000 prize plus the actual laptop as well winners had to sign a NDA upon a successful hack.  The Sony laptop running Ubuntu remained secure through the end of the conference.  However reports stated that Linux bugs were found although no one wanted to spend the time to develop the exploit code required to win the contest.

2 - Microsoft Surface launching April 17th... with AT&T  -  Microsoft has chosen AT&T to launch the world's first Surface into retail. This 30” surface computer will debut to shoppers in New York, Atlanta, San Antonio, and San Francisco and clients will be treated to learning about a device by simply placing it atop the Surface.  The tablet computer will allow gestures to be used to explore coverage maps and in the future user can drag and drop content onto the devices.  AT&T is very excited being the first company to put the Microsoft Surface to use in the retail environment.  If successful this will be rolled out to 2200 US Stores.  And continue to push AT&T ahead of their competition!

3 - Qualcomm Gobi (EV-DO and HSPA) One Device – Awesome for the consumer, converged technologies. Dell and HP have jumped on board saying they will offer laptop with this converged technology embedded into newer laptops. For those not up to speed this with this technology this mean user can connect to both EVDO and HSPA 3G networks without having to carry 2 cards all over the world.   HSPA is based on GSM a worldwide standard however EVDO based on CDMA is primarily in the United States. No exact word on models to carry these cards or cost at time of this report.

4 – Apple passes Wal-Mart, now #1 music retailer in US, Over the past few years, we have watched Apple climb the music sales chart courtesy of the iTunes. Last month we learned that Apple passed Best Buy to become the number two retailer in the the US. Now, Apple has ascended to the top of the charts, surpassing Wal-Mart for the first time ever. The iTunes Store leads the pack with 19 percent, Wal-Mart (which includes the brick-and-mortar stores as well as its online properties) is second with 15 percent, and Best Buy is third with 13 percent. Amazon is a distant fourth at 6 percent, trailed by the likes of Borders, Circuit City, and Barnes & Noble. Rhapsody is in the tenth slot with 1 percent. *Hope Amazon catches them soon…

5 – The Windy31 USB Wireless Router – This thumb drive device can create a wireless network by sharing the computers existing internet connection.  IE: Share you 3G Aircard with your friends to cheap to purchase 3G internet themselves.   Imagine while traveling, meetings and/or conferences.  The Windy31 hooks up to any Windows PC’s USB Port and can support 32 other wireless users.  All software is preloaded into this device and allows customization including the SSID, encryption and more. Supports 802.11g and cost around $60

6 - Straight from AT&T Mobility CEO's Mouth: 3G iPhone Coming in "Months" - AT&T Mobility has mentioned earlier in the CTIA event that they expected all of their smart integrated devices to be 3G in the next couple months.  This will include the Blackberry devices and iPhone type devices I’m led to believe.   Again you're going to see AT&T’s integrated devices all be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months.   Fun with technology…..   Then 4G just 1-2 years out, IE: 10MB – 100MB – Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!!!

- Viewer Questions             (*Troubleshooting, New Tech, Etc.)                                                                                                                                                                                                                             10:00

1- How to perform Disaster Recovery on Windows NTFS/FAT File System – Knoppix Boot CD, Trinity Rescue Kit (Linux Live CD), Mini PE, Hiren Boot CD 9.5

See http://www.knoppix-std.org - STD is a Linux-based Security Tool. Actually, it is a collection of hundreds if not thousands of open source security tools. It's a Live Linux Distro, which means it runs from a bootable CD in memory without changing the native operating system of the host computer. Its sole purpose in life is to put as many security tools at your disposal with as slick an interface as it can.

See http://trinityhome.org - a Linux bootable CD designed to recover/repair dead Windows systems (also Linux). Also can reset lost or forgotten Windows Passwords, Clone NTFS Drives, Recover lost or deleted files and recover lost partitions.

Note: If using Trinity Rescue Kit to reset password you might also try OphCrack Live CD Method.

See http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net - Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is a very efficient implementation of rainbow tables done by the inventors of the method. It comes with a GTK+ Graphical User Interface and runs on Windows, Mac OS X (Intel CPU) as well as on Linux.

See http://minipe.org - MiniPE is basically a live Windows XP cd that allows you to fix your operating system, get rid of virus', fix disk drives, connect to remote computers, and about anything else you would need to do...all without having to have XP running on the machine you want to use it on. Over 100 tools included on this disk....

See http://www.hiren.info - Hiren's Boot CD 9.5 is a bootable CD containing various diagnostic programs such as partitioning agents, system performance benchmarks, disk cloning and imaging tools, data recovery tools, MBR tools, BIOS tools, and many others for fixing various computer problems. Many of these tools are warez. As it is a bootable CD it can be useful even if the primary operating system cannot be booted. Hiren's Boot CD has an extensive list of software. Utilities with similar functionality on the CD are grouped together and seem redundant; however, they present choices through different UI's and options in what they can do. -New Technology to keep an Eye On                                                                                                                      12:00

1- Music File Compressed 1000 Times Smaller than MP3 – Researchers have digitally reproduced music in a file nearly 1000 times smaller than a regular MP3 file. There example was a 20 second clarinet solo encoded into less than a single kilobyte.  Just an Idea where compression could take us in the future. Funded by the National Science Foundation.

2- The Firefighting Robot – Stop Drop and Roll, this autonomous firefighting robot gets it self-preservation instinct from its insect cousins.  Only concept for now this off-road extinguishing apparatus equipped with tanks of water and powered fire-extinguishing agents.  Guided by GPS, Intelligent Feelers, Infrared Sensors and Heat Sensors. Made of a fire resistant fiber that can resist temperatures to 1850 degrees F and could cost from $125,000 to $200,000 weighing 150-200lbs.  Note the embedded GPS could also be used for tracking should any pranksters steal one of these robots.

3- Using Your own Cellular Phone In-Flight -  UK travelers may soon have a chance to chat away on their own phones while in flight. The cells would be switched off during take-off, and turned on once the planes reach a given altitude, which would be a minimum of 3,000 meters. Phone signals would be routed to the mobile base stations on the plane, which would in turn dispatch signals to ground-based networks through a satellite link.

4- GE’s New Water Heater could Kill 30 Coal Plants - They're the most energy-hungry single appliance in the home, and are responsible for about 17% of residential energy use. But because of a lack of consensus on how they should be regulated, and resistance from industry, their efficiency went completely unregulated.  Available now from GE, It's a tankless heater that provides hot water only when you need it. The result is an unlimited supply of hot water, and about 25% less energy use per gallon of hot water produced. The second is even more exciting, though, unfortunately, it won't be available until 2009. GE is calling it a "hybrid electric" water heater. Then the electric water heater takes over, bringing the water up to 140 degrees F.  The new design coming is more than 50% more efficient than previous water heaters. Note: Every home that installs one will see their yearly power bills drop up to $250.

-Tech Tip / Demo

-  Protect Your Privacy when downloading - Fact is whatever your downloading no one likes there online activities monitored. Therefore let’s talk about a few ways you might protect your downloading privacy!

Note: It would be irresponsible to assume any of the mentioned are foolproof.  However each method can increase your privacy.  Also HiWEB does not Condon downloading any copyrighted material.

There are a few methods to employ to protect yourself, thus setting up a layer of protection between you and those who might track you.

When Downloading Bit-Torrents (Keep Anti-P2P Trackers Away from Your BitTorrent Downloads with PeerGuardian2) http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ - IP-blocking application PeerGuardian2 (PG2) uses a constantly updated blacklist of IP addresses known to track your activity.  The first time you run PeerGuardian2 after you install it, you'll have to go through a setup wizard to tell PeerGuardian what kind of blacklists to download and block. By default, PG2 already has Anti-P2P organizations checked. For our purposes, that's really all you need, but PG2 is capable of blocking more IPs if you have other privacy concerns beyond P2P that you want to address.  If you select this method remember to update your Blacklist, your privacy is only as good as your blacklist.   It’s recommended to perform daily updates!

Next method is to obscure yourself with a Proxy, there is not a better solution than a good proxy.

There are many proxy servers out there, check out the Tor Project or potentially roll your own SSH proxy.  A proxy protects you by routing all of your traffic through another server when it leaves your computer and before it returns back to you.  This means the peers your downloading from only see the Proxy IP address, not your home IP address.

http://www.torproject.org/  - Tor is a software project that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

Check out http://www.btguard.com - Located in Canada, BTGuard is a subscription service (about $7/month) that promises anonymous BitTorrentconnections, unlimited speeds, and that it can bypass your ISP's bandwidth throttling (if your ISP throttles BitTorrent)
